History and Culture of the Tribe

In the 1800s, descendants of the Lake Miwok Indians had found themselves landless and homeless. To remedy the situation, the Middletown Rancheria was established in July 1910 on 108 acres of land purchased by the small Tribe. Members of other Tribal groups including Pomo, Wappo, and Wintun then joined with the People of the Tribe.

Today, the Middletown Rancheria’s membership is 201 Tribal Members, including 118 adults and 83 children. Approximately 25 families reside on the Rancheria, with other Tribal Members living in Middletown, the Lake County area, throughout California, and across the United States.

Middletown Rancheria is a sovereign nation within the United States, meaning it is a self-governing entity with a constitution as the basis of all its governing laws. It is federally recognized by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Twin Pine and Mount St. Helena Brewing Company

Middletown Rancheria began operating the Twin Pine Casino out of a modest modular building in 1994. Today, the casino and hotel are housed in beautiful permanent structures that offer state-of-the-art gaming and deluxe accommodations. The Rancheria also owns and operates the Mount St. Helena Brewing Company, a microbrewery and restaurant in Middletown. It was the first Tribe in the United States to run this type of operation and distribute beer.
