About Chateau Montelena Winery

Built in 1888 at the base of Mount Saint Helena, Chateau Montelena Winery was originally known as the A.L. Tubbs Winery after its founder Alfred Tubbs. At the time of its construction, the winery was unique in the Napa Valley, where most similar facilities were built with wood. The Chateau is made of stone walls three to 12 feet thick that provide natural insulation, protecting the interior from extremes of heat or cold. What’s more, the structure is built into a hillside for additional temperature regulation. While this helps produce consistent, high-quality wines, few wineries at the time had the foresight to use these construction techniques.

Its architecture is also unique. The Chateau was designed to resemble an English Gothic castle gatehouse, complete with narrow arched windows, a large arched door in the place of a portcullis, and bartizans with faux arrow slits.

Like other wineries in the area, the Chateau ceased operations during Prohibition, but resumed them in 1933 under the direction of A.L Tubb’s grandson Chapin Tubbs. However, two years after Chapin Tubbs died in 1947, operations were halted again. The property then changed hands twice with winemaker Jim Barrett acquiring it in the early 1970s, clearing and replanting the overgrown vineyard, and bringing the winery back to life.

Today, Chateau Montelena makes a variety of red and white wines with grapes are grown on one of the world’s most unique winegrowing properties. Its loose, stony, well-drained soils produce fruit with layers of complex flavors.
